Current Research Activities: Development and Applications of Analytical Techniques in Environmental Geochemistry, including: (1) Environmental and geochemical applications of Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry (FT-ICR MS), solid state 13-C NMR spectroscopy, three dimensional excitation-emission matrix (EEMS) fluorescence spectroscopy, and high performance liquid chromatography. (2) The biogeochemistry of organic compounds in surface and subsurface aquatic environments. (3) The chemistry of climate change. Currently, our principle climate-related research is focused on the cycling of carbon in peatlands and wetlands, with a goal of understanding how carbon that has been sequestered there for 10,000 years will respond to increased global temperatures and CO2 levels. We are funded by NSF and DOE. Our DOE project includes advanced analytical characterization of peats that have been enclosed in chambers that will be heated and in which CO2 levels will be manipulated.
